On the road check in: Florida!

Friday, May 11th, 2012

I am currently in St. Petersburg Florida with a celebrity client where it is hot, windy and humid….and there are swarms of these wiggly mystery bugs mating everywhere….so much so that I currently cannot go out on my terrace….I’d include a photo of them mating but….it’s pretty gross, to be frank. You don’t need to see that. So, here is a solitary Floridian mystery bug for your perusal….

But when there aren’t swarming, mating, mystery insects…..the terrace is where I love to be- where I relax, read and work on my laptop when not creating makeup magic….

Happy terrace….you can see my hair getting bigger by the minute from the humidity….

I usually eat my in room meals out there….but not this time. Thanks bugs!

The hotel has some beautiful design details which I am crazy about….I love the veranda….the ceiling is gorgeous…..

Everywhere you turn there are gorgeous palm trees juxtaposed with vibrant blue sky on the property….

But there is truly no place like home.  Heading back to Hollywood very soon….I can’t wait to see my beautiful fur ball….

Beauty Tip: I’ll leave you with a beauty tip for people like me with crazy thick, wavy hair that gets unruly in the heat & humidity. I run a small amount of coconut oil (organic food grade) through my hair.My hair gets a hot oil treatment when I’m in the sun, it adds natural shine, separates tangled pieces and overall it makes my hair look more polished. Coconut oil is probably my personal favorite hair care product. Not to mention….it’s fabulous for your skin. Coconut oil is naturally anti-bacterial. Good stuff!

P.S-  if you are on Instragram, Twitter or Facebook….you can keep track of me there, too. Find me!

Dior- “Le Croisette” 5-Color Palette….Swimming Pool.

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

When I first saw this Dior palette, I stared for several minutes- utterly transfixed by the colors. I really wanted it- but not to use on myself or anyone else, really. I just wanted to hold it in my hand and stare at it. It’s art! It’s really beautiful to behold. Seriously-an objet d’art. Inspired by Saint-Tropez and the French Rivera-the Dior Croisette Collection palette “Swimming Pool” will inspire you to think of just that- relaxing by the water in the Summer sun. In a pink bikini. That’s where my mind went, at least. The palette was inspired by the serenity of the south of France and the tranquility of the Mediterranean sea. The colors will make you dream of Summers spent at the beach- memories of your youth and new memories you’d love to create. The prettiest soft pink, sparkling shimmer, beautiful pastel blue, and turquoise. The pleating on the shadows is actually inspired by Dior couture gowns. Simply gorgeous. A dream in a compact….Dream on.

Celebrity Makeup Artist & Beauty Expert Chantal Moore Shares Healthy, Balanced Beauty Secrets!

Celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert Chantal Moore radiates exuberance, confidence and gorgeous-ness!

I happen to feel that makeup in general has gotten a bad rap these days because, truthfully, it is can commonly be littered with poisons.  The idea that many lipsticks are full of lead in toxic amounts is enough to make the average woman cringe.  Even sunscreen can poison your body if its chock full of oxybenzone. Why should we have to deny ourselves the ability to play with beauty artfully to be virtuous and healthy?  How do we find a happy medium between gorgeous and safe, between natural and effective?

Enter celebrity makeup artist Chantal Moore, the most incredible and incredibly well-informed, grounded and conscious beauty expert I could hope to meet in Hollywood who has many secrets to share about beauty, products and the key word: balance.  Get ready to revolutionize your beauty routine!

Ok, Chantal, first of all, I am thrilled to be talking to you about this subject because I, too, struggle with the makeup vs. health/wellness issue where lots of chemical additives are concerned.  First of all, as I sit here in sunglasses with no makeup on, how do you feel about sunscreen? I feel very guilty that I don’t!

Chantal: Protect your eyes! Those sunglasses are important.  There are real benefits as well as dangers involved in sun exposure.  Vitamin D deficiency is becoming a real problem.  I advocate both taking natural supplements and sitting in the sun for a couple of minutes a day.  If it feels good, your body may need it!  I try to use light fabrics to get some degree of protection, some sleeves during the day and wear hats, so I can minimize the use of sunscreen.  If you are looking for a sunscreen, you can check the brands you are interested in online (THIS is a good place to look) to make sure you know what you are putting on your skin if you are concerned.

This is really fascinating to me- how do you find products that are natural and are comparable to high-end “non-natural” makeup which, in some cases, is just flawless in its application?

Chantal: We are our own artistic expression, and we have to find the way to balance our options. I have a 100% green makeup kit for clients who do not want anything that is not completely organic, natural and eco-conscious to touch their skin. I also have a kit that is packed with the best of high-end products that are “not as natural”  blended with the best of organic.  These days, I do not need to compromise performance in products for the sake of being more natural since I have found more natural product lines available are also excellent performers. I like to balance the two, but I tailor what I do to my client’s needs. That’s what I suggest everyone should do, find their own balance.

Mineral makeup. Big topic in the “natural” makeup world.  How do you feel about that?

Larenim mineral makeup

Chantal: I was so excited when it first became popular, since I am personally committed to the most organic I can be for myself.  Mineral makeup caused cystic acne breakouts.  It took some research to learn that bismuth found in many popular mineral makeup brands caused this reaction.  You can find bismuth-free mineral makeup.  Larenim makes a line that is bismuth-free that is worth checking out.

I have a personally bought high-end “pure” tinted moisturizer  that turned out to be very toxic when I looked it up online.  It was a bummer. Are their ways to use concealer and foundations that are actually what they say they are?

Tarte blushe, Amazonian Clay Foundation, tinted moisturizer and Maracuja concealer.

Chantal: Tarte is an amazing company that has a website that details what is and what isn’t in each of their products so you can shop with awareness.  I use the Maracuja concealer, and they do have a great tinted moisturizer.  Tarte’s new Amazonian Clay Foundation is fantastic.  My favorite blushes are also from Tarte.

As I sit here without a stitch of makeup on, what are the few things I should actually do to look better before leaving the house?!

Clarisonic brushes exfoliate brilliantly!

Chantal: First of all… Exfoliation!  Spring brings new rituals, and exfoliation is the key to anti-againg, acne-fighting, all of it.  Exfoliation brings the glow back.  Either do it yourself or get an aesthetician to do it.  You will feel better and get the cell turn-over happening.  Even if you don’t put makeup on daily, always exfoliate.  I use my Clarisonic brush in the shower.  Clarisonic brushes are not cheap, but they are worth every penny.

I’ve had mine for six years, so I consider it an investment! What about daytime eyebrows? I have tried filling in the gaps in mine and looked like a clown during the day!

Chantal: Fill in your brows with a powder that is a shade lighter than your eyebrows and follow the natural line. Don’t “paint” them on. The other routine I think is essential for everyone is curling your lashes.  Curled lashes make a huge difference.  It opens up your eyes.  Even if you don’t put mascara on, the effect is awesome.

Are their “healthy” mascaras?

Chantal: Lavera is a fantastic company with a broad product range. Lavera Intense Volumizing Mascara is a natural ingredient mascara that works. 100% Pure makes a fruit pigmented mascara and they have an amazing full range product line.

Any other secret tips?

A secret weapon in Chantal’s makeup kit: Dr Hauschka’s Rose Cream

Chantal: I love Dr. Hauschka. This is dreamy and it is a makeup kit secret weapon : Dr. Hauschka’s Rose Cream.  I am a believer in sulfate-free hair care and I use Giovanni shampoo; its hard to find brands that work well.  Oh, and I love Lavanila deodorant because it is aluminum free and actually WORKS.

In terms of healthy beauty, I think its a process of doing your own research and trying a few well-reviewed products to find what works for you.  After all, you aren’t being eco-friendly or conscious if you are continually buying and not using or tossing products because they don’t work!  I think we should all be conscious about spending as well.  I believe in certain products that are indispensable, but not everything needs to be expensive to work well.  Once you become aware of what works for you, it becomes second nature to sift through the shelves and find what you are looking for!

This was illuminating, inspiring and so exciting Chantal! Thank you so much!!!

Spring time rituals….my short list.

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

I don’t know about you, but I am an incredibly ritualistic person. I am all about the traditional “Spring Cleaning”- I really get into it. I love to clean my home out and get rid of clutter- anything that I am holding onto that I don’t need. A really good, thorough cleaning for Spring. Sage smudge, white candles, open all the windows, wash the floors, get that energy flowing….out with the old energy to welcome in the new. You’ve got to make room for fresh, new energy. Any excuse for a new beginning or new start….I take it. So, it’s also that time of the year when I mark the beginning of Spring with some ritualistic activity where my appearance is concerned. Even if it’s a matter of simply going to the hairdresser for a 1/2 inch trim….I leave the salon feeling sparkly and new. Here are my top 4 Spring Cleaning “Beauty”  rituals. See if you do similar things….

1) Hair cut- A haircut is going to make you feel brand new in any season-even if it’s just a slight trim. You know what I’m talking about…. but when the temperatures heat up- a great new haircut is a must do to welcome in the new. Trim those ends!

2) Highlights- It’s the season to lighten up. Even if it’s just a few strands strategically placed around the face….it brightens your skin tone, sends light into your eyes….and lifts the spirits. It conveys youth if you were lighter when you were younger ( I was blonde when I was a little girl), and makes it seem like you’ve been away at the beach even if you haven’t been ( my tanning days are over). For me, it jump starts the highlights that my hair takes on naturally in the Summer months. There is nothing like sun kissed hair.

3) Body Scrub- in LA we are big into the Korean spa experience. Maybe because we have some spectacular spas that are also affordable ( imagine that). Spring time means you are beginning to show more skin and so you have got to get rid of the build up of dead skin cells that dull the surface. I love soft, smooth, glowing ”new” skin and nothing gets me there faster than a trip to LA’s Koreatown for a full body salt scrub. In lieu of a real tan- the scrub reveals glowing skin that brings with it the added confidence to show it off. Or as a prep for a faux spray tan- a good exfoliation is a must.

4) Facial- Don’t forget about your face. Even if you are not a regular facial person, it’s good to have a professional clean out your pores and exfoliate your skin. A good exfoliating facial will reveal clearer, smoother, more youthful, glowing skin. Again, in lieu of a real or faux tan- the vibrancy you get after a good exfoliating facial is all the glow you’ll need.

Never discount the power of a new beginning. Part of what excites me about the start of Spring is the change in light. The promise that it will be lighter and brighter and warmer. That Summer is coming. That life reinforcing positive energy rush that “lightness” brings. It inspires me to welcome it in and express my excitement somehow. Through ritual. Even if it is something kind of silly. Even it’s just a 1/2 inch trim. It’s the little things that make you smile to yourself and inspire you to walk a little taller because you feel good with all that new positive energy flowing through you. The little things that lift your spirits to that place. Never discount that. I love a new beginning. The possibilities are endless.

What will you do?

Juicing….

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

To prepare myself for the bevy of sick celebrities and clients I am around constantly- I juice. Many times, I work with people that are traveling constantly- and they are thus constantly fighting sickness as a result. Makeup Artists have to get VERY close to their clients, as you know, and so it takes some conscious effort on our part to protect ourselves from germs. I am vegan, so I already have that in my immune systems favor. I don’t catch colds from people historically….however, I have allergies that can rock my world. I cultivate a healthy immune system as a way of life, really. When I know I don’t have to work, I add whole cloves of garlic to my regular juice routine which normally consists of carrots, cucumber, celery, parsley, beets, green apples, fresh squeezed lemon juice, ginger, and a green superfood powder.

So, here it is: 32 ounces of glory. Drink up, baby! Pardon me while I do….
